Why Drive Yourself

Sometimes you don't want a driver. You want the freedom to leave when you're ready, take the long way, stop wherever you like, and turn the music up without anyone judging your taste. That's what self-drive rental is built for.

At GMS Car Rental, self-drive is the most affordable rate in Kathmandu among well-maintained fleets. It includes everything you need: a clean car with full documentation, full tank discussion at handover, and 24/7 phone support if anything goes sideways on the road.

Whether you're heading out for a Pokhara weekend, picking up family from the airport, running daily errands, or just need a car for a few weeks while yours is in service. We have a vehicle that fits.

What You Need to Bring

Self-drive rental in Nepal isn't complicated, but we follow proper documentation for everyone's safety. Here's what we ask for:

  • A valid government-issued ID: Nepali Citizenship, National Identity Card (NID), or passport for tourists
  • A valid driver's license (Nepali preferred; international licenses accepted case-by-case for short rentals)
  • A blank bank account cheque from your account, held as security deposit and returned at the end of the rental untouched

That's it. No long forms, no hidden steps. Walk into our Pepsicola office (or arrange Rs. 500 delivery anywhere in the valley), bring those three things, sign a simple agreement, and you're driving.

Where You Can Take the Car

Anywhere in Nepal. Inside Kathmandu Valley, outside the valley, hill stations, terai. The car is yours to use as your trip needs. We trust our customers and don't track you with paranoid restrictions.

A few practical notes:

  • Inside valley: any duration works, even half-day rentals (rates apply)
  • Outside valley: minimum 2 days. This isn't a money-grab, it's because vehicle return logistics across Nepal's distances genuinely need time
  • Mileage: no daily km caps. Drive what you need

Our customers regularly take our self-drive cars to Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini, Bandipur, and even further west toward Dhangadhi (where we have a second branch, handy for one-way trips).

The 7 AM / 7 PM Rule

This is the one detail every customer should know. We operate on a 7 AM to 7 PM rental cycle. Days are calculated from 7 AM to 7 PM, not 24 hours from when you took the car.

Here's how that helps you: if your booking starts tomorrow morning, you can pick the car up the evening before at 7 PM, drive it home, park it, and start your trip fresh in the morning. No extra charge for that evening pickup.

The flip side: returning late costs Rs. 2,000 per hour past 7 PM on your return day. So plan your return drive accordingly. If something genuinely unavoidable comes up, call us. We'd much rather work it out than fine you.

Our EV Self-Drive Fleet, Try Something New

Most rentals in Kathmandu are still pushing 10-year-old Wagon Rs. We do that too (we have hatchbacks for budget-conscious renters), but our most popular self-drive bookings right now are our electric vehicles:

  • BYD Dolphin & BYD Atto 3: smooth, silent, surprisingly quick
  • Deepal S07: premium-feeling SUV experience
  • Neta V: practical, affordable EV for city drives
  • Tata Nexon EV & Tiago EV: Indian EVs, well-suited to Nepal's roads
  • MG ZS EV: popular for couples and small families

EVs are cheaper to “fuel” (electric charging is a fraction of petrol cost), quieter, and frankly more fun to drive than what most people are used to. If you've never tried one, ask us at booking. We'll match you with the right EV for your trip.
